Sound moves water. It does not undo damage. If the speaker was crackling or silent before it got wet, or the phone took a long soak in salt water or a pool, a tone will not bring it back. There is an honest list of what this cannot fix further down.
What this tool actually does
A phone speaker is a tiny driver behind a mesh grille. When water gets in, it clings to that mesh and sits in the chamber behind it, damping the cone so it cannot move freely. The audio is not broken — it is muffled, because something is physically in the way.
Playing a low-frequency tone at high volume forces the cone through its widest travel, over and over. That movement does two useful things at once: it breaks the surface tension holding water against the mesh, and it pumps air outward through the grille. Point the speaker at the floor while it runs and gravity finishes the job. It is the same principle behind the Apple Watch water-lock feature and the iPhone Water Eject shortcut.
Dry debris works the other way round. Pocket lint and dust are light and dry, so they respond to faster vibration cycles rather than large slow ones — which is why Dust Removal pulses between 200 and 400 Hz instead of sitting at 165.

Just got the phone wet? Do this first
The tone works best on water that has not had time to settle or corrode. Before anything else:
- Power it down if it went fully under. Current plus water is what actually kills components. A splash is fine; a submersion is not.
- Get the case off. Cases hold a surprising amount of water right against the grille.
- Do not charge it. Wait until the port is dry — most phones will refuse anyway, and forcing it is how ports corrode.
- Do not use a hairdryer. Heat warps adhesive and can push moisture deeper. Cool moving air is fine.
- Skip the rice. It does nothing useful and adds starch dust to the problem.
- Tap it out first. Speaker down, tap firmly against your palm a few times.
- Then run the tone. Volume at maximum, grille pointing down.

When this will not work
Plenty of sites in this category promise a fix for everything. Sound is genuinely useful for a narrow problem, and useless for the rest. It will not help if:
- The speaker crackles, buzzes or rattles. That is a torn or deformed diaphragm. Moving it more will not repair it.
- There is no sound at all. Total silence usually means a failed amplifier or a disconnected flex cable, not a blockage.
- It went in salt water, a pool or the sea. Salt and chlorine leave corrosive deposits behind after the water evaporates. Get it opened and cleaned professionally.
- The problem started after a drop, not a spill. That is mechanical.
- Only calls are affected. That is the earpiece or the proximity sensor — try the muffled speaker guide.
If none of that describes your phone, the tone is worth a try. It takes thirty seconds and costs nothing.
Frequently asked questions
Can this damage my speaker?
No. The tool plays an ordinary sine tone through the speaker at normal listening volume — the same thing that happens when you play music. Phone speakers are built to handle continuous output far longer than a 30-second cycle. The only real precaution is not holding the grille against your ear while it runs.
Does it work on iPhone and Android?
Do I need to download an app?
No. There is nothing to install, no account to create and no permission to grant. The tone is generated in your browser with the Web Audio API, so no audio file is even downloaded.
How long should I play the sound?
One full 30-second cycle is usually enough for fresh water. If the sound is still muffled, wipe the grille dry and run it two or three more times, waiting about 30 seconds between runs. Running it for ten minutes straight does not help more than a few short cycles.
Why does my speaker still sound muffled afterwards?
Usually one of three things: water is trapped somewhere other than the speaker chamber and needs hours to evaporate, the grille is blocked by compacted lint rather than liquid — try Dust Removal — or the driver itself is damaged, which no tone can fix.

What frequency does it use?
Water Eject sweeps gently around 165 Hz, which is close to the resonant range of most small phone drivers. Dust Removal uses a faster 200–400 Hz pulse, because dry particles need quicker vibration cycles to shake loose. There is a full breakdown on our frequency guide.
Should I put my phone in rice?
No. Rice does not draw water out of a sealed phone and starch dust can work its way into the grille and ports, which makes the problem worse. Air circulation and a bit of patience beat rice every time.
