Speaker dust removal

If your phone has been getting quieter for months and never got wet, the problem is almost certainly pocket lint packed into the grille. This mode pulses between 200 and 400 Hz — fast enough to shake dry debris loose without the heavy cone travel used for water.

Where the dust comes from

Your phone spends most of its life in a pocket or a bag. Both are lined with fabric, and fabric sheds constantly. Every time the phone slides in or out, a little of that fibre transfers to the nearest rough surface — and the roughest surface on a phone is the speaker grille.

On top of that, the speaker is electrostatically busy and slightly warm, and it moves air. It is, in effect, a small vacuum pointed at the inside of your pocket. Over a year or two the mesh goes from open to partially blocked, and because it happens a fraction of a percent at a time, you adapt to it without ever noticing.

This is the single most common cause of a phone getting quieter with age, and it is completely reversible. No parts, no repair shop.

Why dry debris needs a different tone

Water and lint are stuck to your grille for entirely different reasons, so the same tone will not shift both.

Water is held by surface tension. It is heavy, it forms a continuous film, and breaking it needs large, forceful cone movement — which is what a low tone around 165 Hz delivers, because lower frequencies mean longer excursion per cycle.

Lint is the opposite. It weighs almost nothing and it is not bonded to anything, just wedged. What dislodges it is not force but rate: many rapid direction changes that work it free from the mesh. That means a higher frequency. Add a pulse — the tone cutting in and out several times a second — and you get repeated shocks rather than one steady vibration, which is considerably more effective at unseating something wedged.

That is exactly what this mode does: a 200–400 Hz sweep, pulsed at around 7 Hz. There is more detail on the frequency guide.

The routine that actually works

Tone alone gets maybe half of it. This sequence gets most of it:

  1. Find a dry, soft-bristled brush. A clean, unused toothbrush is perfect. It must be completely dry.
  2. Brush along the grille, never into it. Sweep parallel to the slot. Pushing bristles inward compacts the lint further, which is the opposite of the goal.
  3. Run a Dust Removal cycle. Case off, volume maximum, grille facing down.
  4. Wipe with a dark cloth. Dark fabric shows the grey lint film clearly, which tells you it is working.
  5. Repeat three or four times. Each cycle brings a bit more to the surface. Diminishing returns set in after about four.
  6. Do the earpiece too. The slot above the screen is usually worse than the main speaker, and it is the reason calls sound quiet.

Never use a pin, needle or SIM ejector tool. It is the most common way people permanently destroy a working speaker. The membrane behind the mesh is thinner than paper, and the moment you puncture it the speaker is finished. There is no gentle version of this — just do not.

How often to do it

Monthly is plenty for a normal phone. It takes under a minute and it stops the decline before you ever notice it. If you work on a building site, spend time at the beach, or keep your phone in a coat pocket full of tissue lint, make it fortnightly.

If your phone has never been cleaned and is two or three years old, expect the first session to make an obvious difference and take several cycles.

When it is not dust

  • It went quiet suddenly, not gradually. Sudden changes are water, a software glitch, or hardware. Try Water Eject and check the muffled speaker checklist.
  • It crackles or buzzes. That is a damaged membrane, not a blockage.
  • Only one channel is affected. Confirm with the speaker test — it may still be lint, but on one grille only.
  • Volume is fine but calls are quiet. That is the earpiece, or the proximity sensor routing audio oddly.

Why does dust removal use a higher frequency than water eject?

Because the two problems need different physics. Water is heavy and clings, so it needs the large slow cone movement of a 165 Hz tone to break its surface tension. Dry lint is light and simply resting on the mesh, so it responds to faster vibration cycles — around 200 to 400 Hz — that shake it loose rather than push it.

How much volume can lint actually cost me?

More than people expect. A grille that is half blocked with compacted lint can cut perceived loudness noticeably and takes the high frequencies down first, which is why the phone sounds thin as well as quiet. Because it happens over months, most people never notice until they clean it and hear the difference.

Should I brush the grille as well?

Yes — the combination works far better than either alone. Brush first with a dry, soft-bristled brush to break up the surface crust, then run the tone to push out what is behind it, then brush again to sweep away what came to the surface.

Can I use a vacuum cleaner on the speaker?

A normal vacuum is too strong and the nozzle rarely seals well enough to do anything useful anyway. If you want to try, use the lowest suction setting with a small nozzle held close but not touching. Honestly, the brush-and-tone routine works better and carries no risk.

Nothing came out. Did it fail?

Not necessarily. On most phones the lint that comes out is a fine grey dust that is nearly invisible unless you wipe the grille with a dark cloth. Judge it by whether the phone sounds louder, not by whether you saw anything fall out.

My earpiece speaker is blocked, not the loudspeaker.
