Fix my speaker — Samsung Galaxy
For every Galaxy: S series, A series, Note, Z Flip and Z Fold. Runs in Samsung Internet or Chrome with nothing to install. Samsung also ships a real speaker diagnostic of its own, which is worth running first — details below.
A sustained low tone that vibrates the driver hard enough to break the surface tension of trapped water and push it out of the grille.
Turn your volume all the way up, then press start.
- Take the case off and turn Bluetooth off.
- Raise the volume to maximum with the side buttons.
- Hold the phone with the speaker facing down.
- Run the tone, wipe the grille, then repeat if it still sounds muffled.
Run Samsung's own diagnostic first
This is the one genuine advantage Galaxy owners have over everyone else, and hardly anyone knows it is there. Samsung Members includes a proper hardware test suite that talks directly to the speaker.
- Open Samsung Members — it is preinstalled on every Galaxy.
- Tap Support at the bottom.
- Choose Phone diagnostics.
- Pick Speaker (and Vibration while you are there).
- Let it play its tone and read the verdict.
Why this matters: it separates a blockage from a failure. If the diagnostic passes but your audio still sounds muffled, the speaker hardware is fine and something is physically in front of it — which is precisely what a cleaning tone fixes. If it fails, no amount of cleaning will help and you can stop wasting time and book a repair.
Turn Samsung's audio processing off
Galaxy phones ship with Dolby Atmos enabled and often an equaliser preset on top. Both reshape the frequency response, and the low-end handling in particular works against you here — the processing exists partly to stop small drivers distorting at high excursion, which is the exact behaviour a cleaning tone needs.
Go to Settings › Sounds and vibration › Sound quality and effects and turn off Dolby Atmos, set the equaliser to Normal, and disable UHQ upscaler. Put it all back once you are done.
While you are in that menu, check Separate app sound too. It routes a chosen app's audio to a different output — useful once, easy to forget, and a classic reason for "the tone plays but nothing comes out of my phone".
Setting media volume properly
Samsung splits volume into media, ringtone, notifications and system. Press start on the tool first, then hold volume up — with audio actively playing, the buttons control the media stream. Or press volume once and tap the three-dot or chevron icon to open all four sliders and push Media to maximum directly.
Foldables need extra care. The Z Flip and Z Fold carry an IPX8 rating, which covers water immersion but deliberately does not cover dust — the hinge cannot be sealed against particles. If the phone got wet, run the tone for the speakers, then leave it open somewhere dry with airflow for several hours. Folding it shut with moisture in the hinge traps it exactly where you least want it.

If it is still muffled
- Run three or four cycles, wiping the grille each time.
- Switch to Dust Removal if no water was ever involved.
- Check each channel with the speaker test.
- Re-run the Samsung Members diagnostic to see whether anything changed.
- Work through the muffled speaker checklist.
Frequently asked questions
Does Samsung have a built-in speaker test?
Yes, and it is genuinely useful. Open the Samsung Members app, go to Support, then Phone diagnostics, and choose the speaker or vibration test. It plays a tone through each speaker and reports pass or fail. If Samsung says the hardware passes but audio still sounds muffled, you have a blockage rather than a fault — which means cleaning will help.
Should I turn off Dolby Atmos before cleaning?
Yes. Go to Settings, Sounds and vibration, then Sound quality and effects, and turn Dolby Atmos off along with any equaliser preset. Dolby processing reshapes the low end, and you want the driver receiving the full unfiltered tone at maximum excursion.
Water got into my Z Flip or Z Fold hinge. Will this help?
It will clear the speakers, but the hinge is a separate concern. Foldables carry an IPX8 rating that covers water but explicitly not dust, and the hinge mechanism has gaps that hold water. Run the tone for the speakers, then leave the phone open in a dry airy place for several hours before folding it shut.
Where are the speakers on a Galaxy phone?
The main loudspeaker is on the bottom edge next to the USB-C port. The second stereo channel is the earpiece slot above the screen. On Z Fold models there are grilles on both halves of the body, so check each one.
My Galaxy shows a moisture detected warning.
Samsung is particularly sensitive about this and will block charging until the USB-C port reads dry. That is a good thing. Run the cleaning tone, then leave the phone somewhere with airflow. It usually clears within a few hours. Do not force charging and do not apply heat.
Does Separate app sound affect this?
It can. Samsung lets you route one app’s audio to a different output — so if you set it up once for a car or a speaker and forgot, your browser audio may be going somewhere else entirely. Check Settings, Sounds and vibration, Separate app sound, and turn it off while you clean.
