Is sound-based speaker cleaning safe?
Short answer: yes for your device, and yes for you provided you keep it away from your ears. The longer answer is more interesting, because the risk people worry about is not the one that matters.
Your speaker is fine
The most common worry is that a loud sustained tone will blow the speaker. In practice this does not happen, for a structural reason.
Phone speakers are not driven directly by whatever signal you send them. There is an amplifier between the audio and the driver, and that amplifier has hard limits built into it — power caps, thermal protection, excursion limiting. Manufacturers put them there precisely because users play music at maximum volume for hours and the speaker has to survive it.
A cleaning tone is ordinary audio going through that same protected path. Thirty seconds at maximum volume is a completely unremarkable load for hardware designed to handle a full album at maximum volume. You have almost certainly subjected your speaker to more than this by accident.
The one technically valid concern
There is a real difference between a tone and music, and it is worth understanding even though it does not change the conclusion.
Music has dynamics. Even loud music is constantly rising and falling, and those gaps let the voice coil shed heat between peaks. Average power over a track is far below its peaks.
A continuous sine wave has no dynamics at all. It sits at full amplitude for its entire duration, so the voice coil is under constant load with no cooling gaps. Sustained tones genuinely do put more thermal stress on a driver than music at the same nominal volume.
This matters at the scale of many minutes at maximum volume. It does not meaningfully matter over a 30-second cycle — which, conveniently, is also all the time the cleaning needs. Run a cycle, take a break, run another. That is both the most effective approach and the gentlest one.
The real risk is your hearing. The numbers here are not ours. NIOSH sets a recommended exposure limit of 85 dBA averaged over eight hours, halving the permitted duration for every 3 dBA increase. The WHO puts the level below which damage is unlikely at 80 dB. A phone at full volume against the ear can exceed both — and a pure tone is easier to overdo than music, because the ear does not register it as being as loud as it is. Never hold the speaker against your ear, and never wear earbuds while a cleaning tone plays — a sealed ear canal means none of that energy escapes.
The rules that actually matter
- Earbuds out of your ears, always. On a table, tone started from your phone, you at arm's length.
- Do not hold a phone speaker to your ear while a cycle runs.
- Lower volume for small drivers. Earbuds need about half. Their drivers reach full excursion at much lower power and there is far less material to clear.
- Warn people nearby. Particularly anyone with sound sensitivity, and anyone wearing hearing aids.
- Move pets out of the room. Dogs and cats hear a wider range than we do and find sustained tones genuinely distressing.
- Short cycles, not long ones. Two or three 30-second runs with breaks beats one five-minute run, on both effectiveness and safety.
Things that are not risks
- Damaging the phone itself. A tone is just audio. There is no path by which it affects the battery, the board or anything beyond the speaker.
- Making water damage worse. Moving water out of a chamber does not drive it elsewhere — the pressure gradient points outward through the grille.
- Voiding a warranty. You are playing a sound. No manufacturer treats that as misuse.
- Wearing out the speaker. Speaker lifetime is measured in thousands of hours. A few thirty-second cycles is not a rounding error on that.
- Interfering with other components. The vibration is contained in the speaker assembly and is smaller than what the phone experiences being dropped in a bag.
Where the real danger is
Worth putting this in proportion. Almost every phone speaker that gets permanently destroyed during cleaning is destroyed by a pin, not a tone.
The diaphragm behind the grille mesh is a few microns thick. A needle or SIM tool goes through it without any resistance you would notice, and once punctured the speaker cannot be repaired — only replaced. People do this constantly, because poking at a visible blockage feels like the direct, sensible approach.

Against those, a tone is remarkably benign. It is the only cleaning method that applies force in the direction you actually want — outward, from behind the mesh — without anything touching the speaker at all.
What it will not fix
Safety and effectiveness are separate questions, and being clear about the second matters too. A cleaning tone moves loose material. It will not repair a torn diaphragm, reverse corrosion, fix a failed amplifier, or shift anything sticky. If your speaker crackles, buzzes or is silent, more cycles will not help — that is a repair, and a speaker module is one of the cheaper parts to replace.
